Community Activities

During the month of November 2009 we worked with Ferryside to help residents understand the impact their lifestyles are having on the planet, to help them reduce their carbon footprint and emissions, and tackle climate change.

During the month, a range of activities took place focussing on five key areas:

  • saving resources
  • saving energy
  • travelling wisely
  • shopping locally and ethically; and
  • caring for the local area and biodiversity.

The campaign was launched on the 1st and 2nd of November. All local groups and organisations were involved in the community-wide programme, including the community council, Village Forum, the local school, cylch meithrin, Pensioner’s Association and Allotments’ group.

There was also a permanent exhibition in the Community Education centre – residents could go along to have a look at the “Climate change, what’s occurring” exhibit, Cynnal Cymru’s “Sustainable House” and lots more!

We also worked with Ferryside to calculate their Ecological Footprint, using WWF’s tool: http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/

This will tell us exactly how many planets the residents of Ferryside are using to support their lifestyles.

The average for Carmarthenshire (and Wales) is 2.8 planets!
